BANGKOK?ith its newest motorcycle Suzuki is aiming to change the face of motorcycle riding in Southeast Asia. The all-new Smash features high-grade components, has a 4-stroke 110cc engine, and delivers the most exciting look people have seen in many years.Since many bikes popular in Thailand are based on old designs, some of them going back many decades, Suzuki had an opportunity to take the lead in many areas by building a motorcycle from the ground up.As one Smash designer said,?he time has come for a true 21st century machine.?Suzuki created the Smash especially for Southeast Asia at the newly established research-and-development centre, Suzuki Motor R&D Asia Co. Ltd., in Bangkok.According to Suzuki, designers and engineers at the centre looked hard at the needs of local riders before starting work.In fact, they interviewed riders of many ages and reflected their opinions in the design. As a result, Suzuki was able to fine-tune the Smash?
Design so it meets?nd even exceeds?iders?needs and expectations. The heart of the Smash is a 110cc 4-stroke engine? Brand-new design that leads its rivals in many ways. Also, in many other areas the Smash breaks down barriers. For instance, it is very lightweight, which improves fuel economy and handling feel.
Plus, of course, the Smash features a completely new look that? Both stylish and dynamic. With its superior combination of performance, style, quality, practicality, and great value, the Smash is sure to live up to its name and be a smash hit throughout the region. The reason is the sharp body lines. The bodywork is formed from an extended V-shape and is joined below the frame like a sportsbike fairing.
The mudguard, body moulding, and handlebar moulding are angled sharply backward, creating a leading edge that gives an impression of aerodynamic efficiency. The handlebars are faired in with plastic mouldings that house the controls and a fashionable instrument panel.?e didn? Simply bolt things onto the handlebars,?says a Suzuki designer.?e made them blend into the overall shape.?As a result, the Smash gives an impression of aerodynamic efficiency. In focus group interviews, almost everyone who saw the Smash was impressed with the overall high quality.Facing the rider is the stylish instrument panel, which is as colourful as it is easy-to-read.
It contains a speedometer, a fuel gauge, a gear-position indicator, a turn-signal indicator, and a high-beam indicator in a layout that matches the Smash? Sharp body lines.Seen from the side, the Smash displays brightly coloured stripes, bright footpeg mountings, a straight, chrome-plated muffler, and the stepped seat. Even when parked at the roadside the Smash looks built for speed. At the rear, a one-piece multireflector combination lamp that wraps deeply into the sides of the tail combines an eye-catching, contemporary appearance with visibility.Stylish instrument panelFront lampsMultirefrector rear combination lamp.
Brand-new 4-stroke 110cc engineA light, compact cylinder head (above) and a VM17 carburettor (left) both contribute to enjoyable performance.A dome-shaped combustion chamber helps to ensure efficient combustion of fuel and air, and a simplified decompressor helps to keep the cylinder head compact and light. An aluminium-alloy cylinder with a steel sleeve helps to keep the engine light. The engine? Cam chain is a?ilent?type that operates smoothly and quietly.A stepless adjuster (bottom) for the cam chain is superior in preventing mechanical losses compared to the ratchet type (top) used on many motorcycles.Oil pumped (shown in red above) through the countershaft helps to cut mechanical losses for efficient running. Most motorcycle riders around the world know the features of a 4-stroke engine: Good fuel efficiency, clean running, and smooth, stable power delivery. In addition to all those, the Smash? 4-stroke engine adds something more that a rider wants: Outstanding low-to-mid range torque that provides fast acceleration for overtaking traffic and smooth, easy running up hills even with a passenger on board.

The Smash offers convenient performance for start-and-stop riding in busy city traffic. The Smash? Ability to accelerate smoothly is aided by a VM17 carburettor, which gives smooth, natural response to the throttle. This carburettor also offers the advantage of low emissions. The Smash has an efficient combustion chamber and a digital CDI system matched to the ignition timing. As much as possible, Suzuki used lightweight parts in the engine.
As a result, the Smash has a low dry weight (89 kilograms with kick starter and 91 kilograms with electric starter.) The advantages of the lightweight engine are good fuel economy, fast acceleration and responsive handling. In fact, this engine uses less fuel than some 100cc engines. For smooth power delivery, the engine designers developed some innovative ways to reduce mechanical losses. Such features include single valve springs, an aluminium alloy cylinder with steel sleeve, a high gear ratio, and a simplified decompression mechanism design that enabled the entire cylinder head to be made more compact and lightweight.
(The decompression mechanism is used with the kick-start version of the Smash.)Suzuki aims to keep the engine running smoothly year after year with a good lubrication system. Instead of force-fed splash lubrication, the Smash? Countershaft has an oil passageway inside for low mechanical losses in many riding conditions. For more power, torque and efficiency, the Smash has a 2.8-litre air cleaner box that lets the engine breathe smoothly.

Significantly bigger than the 1.8-litre air cleaner boxes equipped on some competitors. With its four-stroke design, the Smash? Engine has the further advantage of smooth, quiet running. Its operation is made even quieter by mechanical features including a silent cam chain?he kind found on large sports bikes?nd a stepless cam chain adjuster that, unlike a ratchet-type adjuster, places stable tension on the chain to help avoid mechanical losses. With that thought in mind, Suzuki designers made the Smash exceptionally slim and lightweight and developed a rigid new frame.Whether weaving through traffic or cornering at speed, a strong, light frame is suitable for smooth handling. Suzuki developed the Smash? Frame using finite-element-method (FEM) analysis techniques. Overall the Smash?
Frame rigidity benefits from a straight main tube, and fork rigidity benefits from a headpipe angle that is close to vertical. In addition to benefiting manoeuvrability, the Smash? Lightness contributes to good braking performance.Suzuki realized from the start that the Smash would often be ridden over speed bumps. Ground clearance of 140mm makes riding easy on uneven surfaces, and the suspension has travel to absorb the roughest surfaces. The suspension design also makes the Smash more comfortable over long distancesSuzuki used FEM analysis techniques when developing the frame.High fork rigidity contributes to handling.Braking feel is aided by the bike? Lightness.Ground clearance for uneven surfacesBecause the Smash has so many newly designed features Suzuki was able to make it a comfortable and practical all-round machine for both riders and passengers. The seat has a new?tepped?design that places the passenger higher for a better view of the road ahead. Plenty of padding ensures long-range comfort.
And a large grab bar keeps the passenger steady. As a further feature, the seat is low at 755mm, making the Smash easier to use in town, where the rider? Feet often move between the road and the pegs. The Smash is great for long journeys, too. A 4.5-litre fuel tank gives extra range.Further convenience is realized by features that reduce the time and effort needed for regular maintenance. These include a cartridge-type oil filter (this is easier to replace than the centrifugal type used on other bikes) and a large valve-inspection cover (this allows quick, easy valve-clearance adjustment).Stepped seatLarge grab bar4.5-litre fuel tankCartridge-type oil filterOther features also make the Smash comfortable and enjoyable to ride. The sporty-looking instrument panel, for example, includes a speedometer, a fuel gauge, a gear-selector indicator, and indicator lights for the turn signals and high beam.
And under the seat is a convenient storage area where light luggage can be carried.Electric starterLarge valve-inspection coverUnderseat storage areaIn an interview, a group of Thai and Japanese designers from Suzuki Motor R&D Asia Co. Provided a behind-the-scenes look at the exciting new ideas that shaped the Smash.Engine combustion engineer: Regarding the engine, we made more fuel efficiency a priority since the cost of fuel is very high relative to the average salary.Engine designer: We listened to the voices of our future customers as much as possible. Their opinions had a real influence on our engineering and design sheets.

We even changed facility lines to reflect the kinds of requests people were making. Of course, at the same time, we worked hard and ultimately, our engineering speed increased dramatically.Body designer: Yes, very much. As a pan-regional model, the Smash received input from many parts of Southeast Asia. Many people we talked to wanted a sharper, more modern design, and that was our biggest goal. Also, as with the engine design, working closely with the local market made the whole process faster and more efficient. We listened to people? Opinions up to the last minute, and then made the decision on colours and other design details.
Why we think that the Smash really is the motorcycle people are asking for today.Engine combustion designer: We wanted to offer very good low-to-mid range torque in order to provide better fuel economy. Also, tuning the engine this way gives comfortable riding performance for tandem riding and the kind of daily riding around the city that most people do. In the engineering department, we were happy to be able to hear what people wanted from their motorcycle? Performance, and we are confident we answered their needs with the Smash.Engine designer: The large air cleaner. For power and torque, ours is 2.8 litres, a big difference from the market standard.Body designer: Yes, and the size of the air cleaner was a big issue for us since we aimed to make the Smash very slim. In the end, we managed to achieve both goals?e incorporated a larger air cleaner in a body that? Still very slim.Stylist: Fashionable!

We wanted to build a motorcycle that people would want to show off. We think that the Smash is a motorcycle people will feel proud to own.Body designer: Its light, comfortable handling. I expect a lot of people to say that the bike feels just right.Engine combustion designer: Well, some things have to remain a secret.Stylist: Yes, but I can say that we?e continuing to listen to the voices of our customers.Engine designer: We?e always looking for ways to raise quality while keeping the overall cost to our customers down.Body designer: Suzuki is all about technical innovation. What sets us apart from other makers. In the years to come, Suzuki?
